OUGD502 - Studio Brief 2 - Engaging With Professionals - Creative Report

The creative reports below have been written based on the voice and video recordings previously conducted via personal interviews. These reports have been implemented into my book 'Logo, Font, Rave, Type' made in the brief OUGD504 - Studio Brief 1 - Design for Print.

In the next couple of months, the second edition line of print for this book is scheduled where the book along with these interviews will be published for a second time, this time of a larger quantity and with an ISBN number. Over the summer, I intend to push the release of my book and host meetings with some larger distributors to hopefully get my book for sale in even more shops across the country. This will be one of my main priorities over the summer as it has been difficult to prioritise the sales of my book over my university deadlines over the past few months.

A copy of this published book will be sent to the artists interviewed as a thank you for their time and effort.

Vassilis Skandalis

Vassilis’ passion within the design industry evolved from his love of electronic dance music. In the early stages of his career he produced music, creating the need for album artwork and promotional material for his own sound, this then evolved naturally into a desire to work within the creative industries. This desire encouraged him to move away from Greece to London where he would later study graphic communication at the University of London, this progressed onto working at Defected Records and then the DJ magazine Mixmag. As a senior designer at Mixmag, he specialises in the digital assets, videos and creating visual identities for music artists. The expansion of technology since the late 80’s has now allowed designers to become much more involved with the music scene itself. Holographic lighting and published magazines have become the norm for designers and have allowed for a more developed and established practice from the first fan made music zines.

Nicholas Dixon

Nicholas is an established manual designer who utilises hand rendered techniques as the main basis to inform his abstract colourist personal style. His expressionate designs stem from the emotions of music and are heavily informed by his experiences throughout the acid rave era. Now years after the movement, he has kept music close to his heart as he develops his artistic career alongside. He has become the artistic director for Eats Everything’s Edible Label and currently designs record sleeves and promotional material for the music artist whilst working closely with the likes of Back to Basics in the Leeds area. Music wise, he grew up purely on house music, DJing throughout his early years. In 1993, he went to music college to study music technology using analogue studio techniques, he then moved on to host full moon parties in Thailand and south east Asia before moving to Germany. It was here when he started developing his style by scribbling his expressions in sketchbooks however, it wasn’t until 12 years later when he would again pick up on art and start to make a career out of his work. Living back in England in 2010, he showed his sketchbook to Mikey Brain of the label Hot Creations and instantly started collaborating creating expressionist art forms. His practice has slowly developed getting bigger and adding colour to his once close knit black and white sketch book. His artwork is a living representation of his life experiences meaning that each one is very personal and emotional to the artist, each design resonates with the rhythm of house music. The studio environment which he works in is conjoined with KMAH Radio Station allowing his practice to be ever more involved with the music industry.

In 2013, he conducted artwork for Urban spaces in Ibiza over a period of 5 months making this project by far the biggest he has undertaken.
