OUGD602 - Love Triangle Exhibition Opening Night

Our 'Love Triangle' exhibition was an opportunity for further publicity for me as an individual within the creative industries along with a chance to meet fellow students and creatives from other courses. It was an extremely rewarding experience to see my book being viewed by so many people in a celebratory sense. I also took the opportunity to add some of the social media accounts listed around the room from some of my favourite pieces. This is again a natural exercise of branching out and furthering my own progression as a creative practitioner.

OUGD602 - Developed Self Branding

New Logo Design

In the wake of my last year in eduction, it seemed necessary to develop upon my current self branding identity to a icon which is more clear cut and clean. The developed logo design builds upon the previous design however, issues were ironed out which I have now recognised after having a better knowledge of graphic principles. The new design is vectorised and infinitely scaleable, this allows the design to work on extremely small formats along with offering opportunity for methods such as embossing or debossing. This could be utilised on self branding business cards in the near future as my presence is ever growing with the meeting of new contacts and design studios. It is now deemed suitable to start work designing business cards for myself as this year I believe they will be properly utilised.

A final thought on the idea generation behind the logo is that I actually thought of the design whilst I was asleep. I woke up in the middle of the night and sketched this simple idea in my phone before falling back to sleep. This is not the first time that this has happened in recent months and I find it ever more incredible that my graphic practice is becoming that embedded within my subconscious that I am thinking of design even whilst unconscious.

OUGD602 - Leeds University 'Art Trail 2017' Exhibition

Visiting an exhibition from another Leeds based university has allowed me to put things in perspective as to what other courses are like, as well as view my competition when leaving the course next year and looking for jobs. The exhibition was also a great opportunity to meet other students working on similar degrees to me, these contacts gathered could allow me to collaborate next year or even work together in the creative industries.

The work displayed was a mixture of fine art, graphic design, photography and illustration with much of the artwork being hard rendered. There was however quite a large section of screen prints which I found particularly interesting bearing in mind that we have recently conducted a similar project.

OUGD602 - Extended Responsive Work

Once I had used the 3D printing facilities at Leeds Beckett, I brought the individual shapes back to the metal work department to start building the maquette. Each piece needed to be sanded down and glued together to then be applied onto a foam board. The physical result helps to demonstrate how the finished version would construct and interconnect. This extended work for the responsive brief will not only give me a higher chance of winning, but has also furthered my development as a working professional allowing me to operate a broader range of skills with the knowledge of 3D printing software.

OUGD602 - Learning 3D Printer Software

After reaching the final stages of judging in the 'Starpack Student Awards' responsive brief for OUGD503, they asked the finalists to send in any physical mock ups they had created for the competition. This was not a mandatory requirement for the brief however, I felt that it would bolster my chances of winning if I also managed to create a detailed maquette.

Therefore, I reached out to some of the institutions around Leeds which may have 3D printing services available such as Leeds College of Building and Leeds School of Architecture (Leeds Beckett). Thankfully, one of the staff at Leeds Beckett said that he would help but as he was so busy with final deadlines, I would have to download the software and create the 3D digital shape myself. This was a great opportunity to learn a new piece of software and after a few youtube tutorials, I managed to precisely craft the shape needed to scale. This was then uploaded
ready to begin the 3D printing production process.

OUGD502 - Studio Brief 2 - Nicolas Dixon Interview Video

Nicolas Dixon Interview Video

Both of the video interviews conducted cut out half way through, it was lucky that I had also set up a voice recorder as a back up. This is a valuable lesson to learn when conducting interviews at a later date. Both voice recordings are over 20 minutes long whereas the videos cut out at around 10 minutes. If I had not prepared then I could have lost valuable information due to hardware failure.

Vassilis Skandalis Skype Chat Interview

As can be seen in the video above, I experienced the difficulties of using online communication to conduct an interview. The connection quality was poor at times and caused problems with hearing each other.

OUGD502 - End of Module Evaluation

This years PPP module has become second hand to my practice as a developing designer, I no longer feel as though it is an academic module as it has become part of who I am as a practitioner. A prime example of this was last week when I realised that the PPP submission was coming up, I instantly started to panic as I couldn't really remember doing the module but to my surprise, when I checked my blog it had over 100 blog posts published. It was here that I realised that engaging with the creative industries has become natural to my personality. I constantly find myself watching design related documentaries, reading design articles and literature and visiting galleries and exhibitions without even thinking about university work. It is an interesting transition when I find myself relaxing from the stress of university deadlines by watching or reading design related material. The creative industries now fills my free time as well as my work time and I often find myself engaging with the production of music along with creating artwork.

At the start of studio brief 2, I found myself thinking that interviewing creatives would be a pointless exercise however, it has given me so many valuable contacts who I am still in contact with to this day. It has also resulted in me being offered to come and work at Mixmag down in London for a few days and being invited to collaborate in future projects. Over the summer I intend to travel to London to pursue this invitation as well as push my book and app projects drastically. I will also continue to work freelance via my online portfolios.

I have found that skills such as presentations have developed drastically over the past year, along with  traditional printing, motion graphics, editorial, book binding, wire framing, interface design, illustration and most of all, conceptual design. This year has been the most influential to my practice than any other year, the amount that I have learnt is staggering to me. At the start of the year I was using purely photoshop for all of my design as it was the only software we had at college, it was my aim to learn new software to help professionalise my practice. Now, I am proficient in After Effects, Adobe XD, InDesign, Illustrator and photoshop whilst also having a brief but developing knowledge of Cinema 4D and Sketch Up.

OUGD502 - Studio Brief 2 - Engaging With Professionals - Creative Report

The creative reports below have been written based on the voice and video recordings previously conducted via personal interviews. These reports have been implemented into my book 'Logo, Font, Rave, Type' made in the brief OUGD504 - Studio Brief 1 - Design for Print.

In the next couple of months, the second edition line of print for this book is scheduled where the book along with these interviews will be published for a second time, this time of a larger quantity and with an ISBN number. Over the summer, I intend to push the release of my book and host meetings with some larger distributors to hopefully get my book for sale in even more shops across the country. This will be one of my main priorities over the summer as it has been difficult to prioritise the sales of my book over my university deadlines over the past few months.

A copy of this published book will be sent to the artists interviewed as a thank you for their time and effort.

Vassilis Skandalis

Vassilis’ passion within the design industry evolved from his love of electronic dance music. In the early stages of his career he produced music, creating the need for album artwork and promotional material for his own sound, this then evolved naturally into a desire to work within the creative industries. This desire encouraged him to move away from Greece to London where he would later study graphic communication at the University of London, this progressed onto working at Defected Records and then the DJ magazine Mixmag. As a senior designer at Mixmag, he specialises in the digital assets, videos and creating visual identities for music artists. The expansion of technology since the late 80’s has now allowed designers to become much more involved with the music scene itself. Holographic lighting and published magazines have become the norm for designers and have allowed for a more developed and established practice from the first fan made music zines.

Nicholas Dixon

Nicholas is an established manual designer who utilises hand rendered techniques as the main basis to inform his abstract colourist personal style. His expressionate designs stem from the emotions of music and are heavily informed by his experiences throughout the acid rave era. Now years after the movement, he has kept music close to his heart as he develops his artistic career alongside. He has become the artistic director for Eats Everything’s Edible Label and currently designs record sleeves and promotional material for the music artist whilst working closely with the likes of Back to Basics in the Leeds area. Music wise, he grew up purely on house music, DJing throughout his early years. In 1993, he went to music college to study music technology using analogue studio techniques, he then moved on to host full moon parties in Thailand and south east Asia before moving to Germany. It was here when he started developing his style by scribbling his expressions in sketchbooks however, it wasn’t until 12 years later when he would again pick up on art and start to make a career out of his work. Living back in England in 2010, he showed his sketchbook to Mikey Brain of the label Hot Creations and instantly started collaborating creating expressionist art forms. His practice has slowly developed getting bigger and adding colour to his once close knit black and white sketch book. His artwork is a living representation of his life experiences meaning that each one is very personal and emotional to the artist, each design resonates with the rhythm of house music. The studio environment which he works in is conjoined with KMAH Radio Station allowing his practice to be ever more involved with the music industry.

In 2013, he conducted artwork for Urban spaces in Ibiza over a period of 5 months making this project by far the biggest he has undertaken.

OUGD602 - Leeds Digital Job Fair 3.0

Having visited the Leeds Digital Job Fair 2.0 whilst in second year, it seemed more fitting to revisit the event whilst in third year as there are much more opportunities for students coming to the end of their course. Having prior experience also allowed me to be more prepared this time around, I took several printed CV's with a better overview of credentials which would be desirable at many of these companies.

The CV allowed me to open dialogue freely with many of the company stalls, and gave me the opportunity to leave something tangible with the company to help them remember my details. The company 'Zeal' seemed genuinely interested in my skill set and had places open within their workforce, I received their contact details and intend to follow this opportunity up further to try to find a possible placement.
