OUGD602 - Robot Food - Professional Talk

Notes-
  • Focus on the products USP
  • Introduce something which is unexpected into the brand
  • See what everyone does is doing and do something different
  • Design for the audience, what would they like to see?
  • Gather the existing brands and try to reinvent them with something new and innovative
  • Get people interacting with the brand
  • Project-Disrupt.com
  • Martin@robot-food.com - now hiring
The planning and thought process methods shared throughout this talk is what I have mainly taken away. The way which they tackle a brief was so interesting to see and hopefully I can take some of these thought processes into my own practice.

  • Art Residencies
  • AN.net - Artist Network
  • Put a proposal together for travelling as a brief
  • £175 day rate
  • dittofair - music fair

Roses talk was inspirational in a completely different way than the one yesterday, I has opened my eyes to new possibilities of working overseas and applying for creative grants for this funding. I hope to put a proposal together soon for a grant in the hope to travel and teach creative processes abroad. Due to this, I have applied for a volunteering role at a local primary school to tech young children design. I hope to gain some skills which might help me put this proposal together.

In terms of the zine production task, it showed the something large can be created collaboratively within a short time scale. The production style and binding wasn't to my taste but it has given me more knowledge of book and magazine design which will be beneficial within my practice.

OUGD602 - Studio Blup - Professional Talk

Notes
  • Be within the culture, work within your interests
  • Network in different industries
  • 123 clan grafiti collective
  • Different mediums apart from just magazine design, skateboards, apparel, furniture etc...
  • Set Your Goals
  • Save images in sections on Instagram
  • Do not use @gmail.com etc...
  • Create a Studio that perceives you as a million pound company - quirky names
  • Read the briefs in the real world
  • Reach out to magazines etc... to get featured, be omnipresent
  • Society 6
  • Commit First, Figure the rest out later
  • Set yourself opportunities to be creative outside of client work
  • Combine making money and doing what you love
  • Zazzle.com
  • Make your work move
  • Appeal to a specific target audience

The talk with studio 'BLUP' resonated with me and gave me confidence in my own ambitions. For Dines to have started up his own studio from his bedroom to now be where he is within the industries has showed me what is capable if I am confident in my own ability and aspirations. This talk has seriously made me want to start up my own studio and work with a large range of clients on huge projects. I hope to take some of his advice into my own practice to start progressing towards to goals.

OUGD602 - Updating Design CV

With the graduation of my degree closing in, I have been increasing my interaction with creative professionals and studios within the industry. I intend not to spread my contacts to give me a better chance of finding work after university. To help aid this process, I have streamlined and updated my CV with added references and work experience.

OUGD602 - Revamp 004 - Saoirse

The Revamp 4th event was another collaboration, this time with the Leeds based events company Limit. We brought in the rising artist 'Saoirse' to headline the event alongside some of our resident DJs from Revamp and Limit. This event focused more on the planning and organisation side of event management. We have built up enough base profit from our 3 previous events that we had extra money to spend on extras such as a professional photographer, props, lighting, better venue and a more expensive headlining act. This was of course all managed within budget procedures and organised within excel documents.

OUGD602 - Whitecloth Gallery Leeds - Graduate Photography Exhibition

Last night, I visited the LAU graduate photography exhibition at the Whitecloth Gallery in Leeds, I find it extremely important to engage with all fields within the creative industries to give myself a wider knowledge and understanding of all elements of design. Many similarities still remain such as layout, composition, colour and the exhibition design in general. I hope to continue engaging with my passions outside of graphic design to make myself a more well rounded and skilled practitioner.

OUGD602 - Reaching out to Creatives - Pfadfinderei Berlin

After conducting further research into design studios located within the music industries, I came across Pfadfinderei Berlin. They specialise in the Berlin Techno Scene which I am heavily influenced by, therefore, I found it fitting to send them one of the Acid House books in order to grab their attention. I also included my CV and a small piece of writing (written in their tone of voice):

To the producers of First Class Digital Shit //

My name is Dylan Tai Stott and I currently study Graphic Design BA Hons at Leeds Arts University, England, UK. I am writing to tell you how much of an influence your design and the Berlin Techno Scene in general has on my practice. Last year I visited Berlin to see some galleries and exhibitions along with attending events at Suicide Circus, Tresor and Berghain. I have much love for German Techno but as a gift, I thought that I would introduce you to some of the UK Acid House Scene from the 80’s and 90’s. Therefore I have attached one of my books (sourced, designed and produced by myself) for you to look through. I hope it has as much influence on you as your design does on me.

I am currently finishing my degree and hope to travel to Berlin again this Easter. It would be great if we could meet up whilst I’m there.

If you would like to contact me you can reach me on the email address //
dylancreativedesigns@gmail.com

My portfolio can also be seen on the website //

I intend to continue looking for other possible design studios to reach out to in preparation for life after uni.

OUGD602 - Filming & Cinematography Photoshoot Collaboration

I have recently been approached to collaborate with the Leeds RAG Fashion Show team for some cinematography freelance work based on the promo vid created in the blog post OUGD603. Although I have done many freelance photography jobs, this was the first experience of freelance filming work for me; it was the perfect opportunity for me to gain some valuable experience to further my skills within the filed of cinematography. It has also led to some great contacts who I will be working with again in the future.

OUGD602 - New Books

Over Christmas, I bought 2 new design books from Selfridges to add to my collection. In particular, the 'Factory Records' book has been hugely inspirational to me as it showcases all of the artwork from 'Factory Records' such as vinyl album art and interior design of the Hacienda. Both of these books will continue to shape my development and values as a creative professional.
